Looking for advice on driving a motorhome to Alaska (through Calgary / Banff). It's 3000+ miles one-way! We're long-time campers with some boondocking experience. Is it worth it? An epic trip or boring/dangerous?
Absolutely an epic trip—scenery through Alberta and the Yukon is incredible. The Alaska Highway offers a true wilderness experience, but it's important to be prepared for long stretches without services.
An epic trip for sure! My husband and I drove it in 2017, a 26 foot TT and our Sequoia, two dogs. You need to be super prepared we took the Cassiar Highway northbound and the AlCan going south. That summer the wildfires in Canada were abundant and the minute we crossed the Canadian border we had to switch our itinerary. Gas is so expensive in Canada and the liter thing constantly confused us. In researching the trip one thing that came up several times was not crossing the Canadian border with dairy products in our TT, so we ate or got rid of all dairy products before we crossed. They didn't even check our TT, same with our dogs rabies and shot records. I had a miserable time with the mosquitos, spent so much money on things that didn't work, long pants, long sleeves and a head net and clothing spray worked about as good as anything.
^^ It was hit or miss on the few border crossing we did to Canada, 2 times I remember they did look through our camper but mostly just a few quick questions and we were on our way. Our camper vanity is loaded with sunscreen, mosquito repellant along with the head nets Mike
