Similar to the post below, the location for Duke's Slickrock Campground & RV Park in Hanksville, Utah, is shown as Duke University.
OK there is no doubt this map pin is in the wrong place. I don't know how it got that way, but I am going to document everything I see and do to fix it. 1. I opened the park's listing and clicked on the "View on Google Maps" link. 2. I showed the pin on Duke University which is way off given that the park is in Utah. 3. Next I looked at the location on a screen that only admins can see. 4. The pin was at the same location in North Dakota as the others that have been reported in this mess. (In the first reported instance, I said the default pin was in South Dakota, but probably just did not look closely enough to see it was ND.) 5. On this admin screen I clicked on Fetch Geodata from Google maps but nothing changed. This is probably because Google maps has it wrong so any informationthat comes from there is still wrong. 6. Next I used the park's Facebook page to find out the true location of the park. 7. Then on this same admin page I moved the pin to the correct location and saved it. Moving the pin also changed the longitude and latitude on this page to the correct coordinates. 8. I went back to the park's listing and looked at the Google map again and it was correct. 9. I also checked and moving the pin to the correct location on the admin screen also put the pin in the correct location the state map. It is not that difficult to change the location of the map pin on our RVPR screen, and then the changes are also made on the Google map screen. I don't know how or why this works, but it does. So we appreciate when any member reports incorrect pins to us, but only site admins can change them.
PS to my previous post. I forgot to mention that moving the pin to the correct location on the admin screen also put the pin in the correct location the state map. (I have added this edit to the original post.)
Google Maps doesn't have the data wrong, the problem is that Google Maps only carries a listing Duke's Slickrock Grill and not the campground. Furthermore, if you aren't careful with the search you end up with the Slickrock CG in Moab. The Duke University error could have occurred at anytime in the past, even before the RVPR system was updated.
I don't understand how Google maps cannot have the wrong data if it puts the pin for this campground on Duke University? And yes, you do have to be careful that you get the pin on the right park. That is why I used the information on the park's website (well, actually it was their FB page) to find out where the park was located. The FB page could still have the wrong location, but if they don't know where their own park is, then they have a big problem. It is most likely that when this park was entered into the system when the first review came in back in Sept. 2014, the coordinates were never set (at least not the correct ones) and it was not noticed until now. This was before the new system came on line, but I doubt the change over caused this.
I don't think that the Duke University issue had anything to do with Google Maps. I think it was a human error. When I searched for the park using Google Maps I either got the park in Moab or the Grill. I think someone searched for "Duke" and didn't pay any attention to where they were dropping the pin.
It might be a useful activity for us admins to simply go through the parks one by one checking if ALL the map data is correct, both the popup map and the detail in the Edit Location section. It would be a good thing to do while the number of reviews is still relatively small. It doesn't have to be a big deal but if each of us took a state we could plow through the parks in a reasonable amount of time.
