Just to let people know that we left a hotel near Rising Sun MD to get back on I-95 south and the map took us to a low bridge on Muddy Rd. Height 11' and we are 11' 1"
Been there, done that, only not in Maryland. Our experience was on a narrow 2 lane road but fortunately, after several attempts and some tight maneuvering, we were able to get turned around and got ourselves out of that situation. The marked bridge clearance heights are often about 6" to a foot lower than actual to allow for repaving, packed snow, etc. If the sign says "Actual Height 11' " though, believe it. There are specialized GPS models for RV'ers and truckers that allow you to set your vehicle height and will route you around low clearances.
I have a Gramin GPS made for RVs and it works as Dutch says. The only issue is that you still have to have a sense of where you're going. It tends to keep us on interstates where we much prefer the country roads to see America, not billboards.
Check your settings for an avoidance choice that says "Highways". That will keep you off the Interstates and other major highways. Check the routing to a known location that includes an Interstate, then turn on the "Highways" avoidance choice and check it again to see the difference.
Hi, I was under the impression that the RV Life GPS would take into consideration height, keeping you away under height bridges. Wondering if updates have been made since original post. Thanks, Dave
The way the OP was worded, there is no way to know if they were using the RV Life GPS app, or something else. We might infer that is what they were using since they posted here, but we can't be sure. I have little experiance with the RV Life GPS, but i assumed it routed you away from bridges lower than your RV. Same thing with Trip Wizard.
Height -- RV safe warns of low clearance but doesn't say how low. My Class C is 10.5' -- Mackinaw bridge has a low warning near it, but does it apply to I-75 or some side street? Trip Wizard needs to be more specific. I want to know before I go, so guess I'll phone the MI dept of transportation and ask. But TW ought to provide info when you click on the warning triangle as to location and specs. (If there's a better way to post this, somebody let me know; I'm unsure how to ask such a question new, on its own.)
