We're planning a trip in our RV to Alaska in mid May. We'll be sailing from Juneau to either Skagway or Haines in early June and heading to Ancorage. Which would be the best route to Anchorage, from Haines or Skagway?
It all depends on your interests. Skagway is the start of the Klondike Gold Rush trail to Dawson City. Historical buildings, Chilkoot Trail, narrow gauge railroad that takes you past spectacular scenery, and of course the Klondike highway that takes you to Carcross and Whitehorse where it joins the Alaska highway. The Haines highway is spectacular as well and lots of panoramic views along it before merging with the Alaska highway at Haines Junction.
Thank you that's really helpful. We want to avoid high mountain passes , if possible, which of those 2 routes would you recommend?
Both roads climb up to around 3500 ft asl and have a steady climb up to the summits. The climb on the Klondike highway out of Skagway is steeper as it climbs over 3000 ft in about 15 miles. On the Haines highway the summit was about 50+ miles from Haines.
Thank you again. I'm guessing the weather at the time will influence which route we take. Your information Has been very helpful
