Hi all, One way to save some bucks next time fuel prices go through the roof is to find free or inexpensive camping locations. I could see using one of those places as a stopover if no other campground is in the vicinity on your way to your ultimate destination. But, I would never consider any of these places as an alternative to a real campground to save money. I'd rather save money by camping in my own driveway before I'd consider any of these places.
Hi BBear, You had better define "real" campground. IMHO there are many "real" campgrounds to be found by sifting through the urls listed. One has to look a little more than at the surface, for example this one has 50 Amp service and lots of amenities at $15.00 per night. http://freecampgrounds.com/detail.aspx?id=2205 Part of the joy of traveling in an RV is our ability to stop wherever we want. I prefer sites that are not on the beaten path--just as I prefer not to use Interstate highways. It is about choice. I am also a rolling stone--rarely stopping more than one night. I want to see what's around the next bend in the road. My next RV trip will be about 1600 miles--and the one after that about 5000. I prefer boondocking just as my parents did back in 1956. I look for places that are quiet. If there is power *great* if not that's what my inverter, battery bank, solar panels, and generator are for. I'd likely be dead before I visited a so called "resort" RV park--let alone stay in one place for a month. My comment was directed more towards those places listed that are essentially nothing more than a businesses' parking lot..i.e., Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. Sorry, I should have been more specific. But, like you said it comes down to choice. I was just giving my opinion.
Don, We feel the same way as you and we also are rolling stones. We only stay in one place as long as we need to complete our tours and we move on to the next place. We know all to well this cost more money and fuel cost but we do not sit in one place and then drive 85 MPH back home and sit some more. We have been to lots of places over the years and more are on our list to see yet. We also travel back roads all we can to see how other people live and play. We can stay about anyplace with no problems, we have everything in motorhome we need to live well.
