Left the van behind and decided to do a day trip North of Brisbane for a bit of beach driving and a visit to a brand new Pub built near the island. Set up and ready to go! Fridge....Shovel....... fishing gear........Snatch strap....check! Beach drive with a degree of difficulty of about 6 I think. That is Queensland's Sunshine Coast with its high rise at the top right of the picture. Nice little camping areas, inexpensive, toilets and showers near by, fire rings and right on the beach. The view from the Camp site During the second world war the greatest generation set up forts with gun emplacements and lookout post expecting a Japanese invasion. Many Many young American Marines, Infantrymen and Australian Diggers practiced landing and securing these very beaches with their training resulting in landings that include, For the young Americans, Saipan and Tarawa. The forts, camps & emplacements built by both the Americans and Australians remain to this day. I have no doubt that the fathers of members of this site trod this very ground.
In this case, this particular emplacement was a command and control bunker that has worked its way from the bush to the beach over the decades. It represents the end of the road for beach driving but you are able to walk another couple of miles up the beach from here. And a view south....... A bit of Beach Fishing And then its time to get a feed and a few beers before the wife drives you home.....Hahahahahaha. Brand new Pub called the Sandstone Point Hotel right on Pumisctone Passage before you get onto the island. Huge and brand new. View from the beer garden Very nice new Pub...great food and cold beer!
What a beautiful beach! I'd love to be there with our motorhome parked with a great view of the ocean.
Love the forts, we camper next to similar WW2 forts at fisherman's memorial campground in Rhode Island, except our forts were in defense of the Germans! Mike
