I am going crazy trying to find the "perfect" campground...so I am hoping to get some advice. We live in NE TN and usually camp in the Pigeon Forge/Townsend area. We are looking for something different. Considering the area around Asheville, NC. I know Mama Gerties is supposed to be good, however, not a good choice for our family... the kids are 16, 13 and 4. I read Rutledge Lake was good... then bad. Anyone have any ideas for a campground (Tn/Va/Nc area... in a 100 mile or so radius of Bristol, TN) that would be a great place for the kids??? We have a 32' TT. I appreciate it...... I am stressing out here : )
You have a number of parks around Ashevile to pick from. As you said Mama Gertie'e, this park is on side of a large hill and has very small road, one lane into park from Hwy. You have Asheville Bear Creek, Deep River Campground, Campfire Lodgings, Holly Bluff, French Broad River, Asheville Taps, and Rutledge Lake (look under Fletcher, NC) to pick from. Visit Biltmore Estate, great place to tour. Number of very nice places to eat, one place over looks the Biltmore had all home made food. Place downtown had great food, all the local people eat there. I can not remember all the names. Check out all the web sites and have fun.

I am stressing out here : ) There are alot of mountian hikes around Galinburg, and much for kids to do outside the campground. I know my kids would have fun there if we would take them despite what the campground offers. This is a hard question without knowing your kids. We always plan our trips with the things our kids enjoy in-mind. Our 6 year old son is a car-nut, so right now we are at the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton, New Brunswick. Over 1300 antique and hot-rod cars all over the place! I don't recall how far from Bristol it was, but the kids all like the Yogi campground in Luray VA. It doesn't seem like it was too far from Bristol though. A little further is Hershey PA, and I'm sure all your kids would love it there. You should only have to worry about keeping the 4 year old busy. The 13 and 16 year old should be able to get on the net and find things they want to do around your destination. Let them participate in the trip planning and if they pick something they don't like let them stress about it.
Hi. I just checked mapquest. Luray is almost 300 miles : ) We did go to Asheville today... a day trip.. and checked out a few campgrounds.. and I am still undecided : ) Hubby liked Campfire Lodgings.... but i dont think the kids would like it. Rutledge lake was a bit better suited for the kids... still no pool... but a swimming and beach area in their small "lake".. and a nice campground. Campground was immaculate. Not sure how "friendly" of a campground it would be though. we shall see what happens>> have to hit send and reboot>> laptop acting up now>>>>> thanks for the info>>>

I am stressing out here : ) Hi, we live in Roanoke, Virginia and have checked out all of the campgrounds around. I would check out RJ's RV resort in Hillsville, Va. It is exactly 100 miles from Bristol. It has two large waterslides, putt putt, paddle boats, fishing, a pool, and a very large game room. Our children are 13, 13, and almost 15 so I know what it is like to have to keep children that age happy. Hope this helps.
We spent the past weekend at Lake Ridge (was RJ) in Hillsville.. and the kids loved it. We are going back in October for a Halloween weekend. Great family campground with lots of activities. [
We love Lake Ridge(RJ). Lots for the kids to do. If you are looking for a quiet campground for a fall getaway, check out FOX TRAIL CAMPGROUND just up the road in Fancy Gap, Va. By the way, we are off this weekend to try out the Four Paws Kingdom campground in Rutherfordton, NC about an hour from Asheville. Got great reviews! Hope my dogs like it and I plan to tour the Biltmore Estate.
we camped in ashville last fall. and like you are still serching for the best campground. you might look at the cherokee area. thered are several places here/ we had considered the jellystone park here.dont know too much about things for kids in the area . past that but there is a casino here for adults , nice gampground near brevard -black forest camping resort.-and several places around hendersonville Thee is alot to see and do in this area. the downtown is interesting and biltmore house. we stayed at bear creek. wass ok but dont get on the lower lot-interstate noise. peop;e were nice, the hostess tried to steer us aqway from lower lots, but we werre new and insisted on a pull thouugh. good luck ps we live in wilmington so dont have an azx to grind.
Roanoke Campers- have you looked at the Jellystone Parks in Natural Bridge and Luray. We have stayed at the Natural Bridge location and had a great time. Once again, lots for the children- large pool, lake with a sandy beach, pay pond for fishing, and if you like tubing or canoeing-the James River can't be beat in my book. Also great smallmouth fishing in the James. We went up the road to rent canoes as it was a bit cheaper. The owners could spend some of the vast amounts of money that they are taking in to update the bathhouse in the upper campground(the place was pretty booked up when we were there), but all in all the place was about an 8 in our books. Also, make sure that you have long electric and water leads, as the hookups are at the front of the sites. We had to move after levelling because our leads were too short. As of yet, we have not camped at Jellystone Luray, but all of the reviews that we have read on this site and others have been good. We are planning a trip to upstate New York next year and are putting Luray as our first stop. Also, there is a new Jellystone opened in Marion, NC. So far the reviews look good so we are planning a trip there in August. I will post a review when we are back.
