Does anyone know about the Mardi Gras Campground in New Orleans. If not, do you know of a good campground in that area? Thanks
We use the KOA West in New Orleans. This is a great place to see city from. I do not think you would happy with any site close to city. KOA is about 10 miles West. You can ride the street car downtown and park the tow car in street. People at KOA have more information or let me know if you need more help. We spend a lot of time in the New Orleans.
In my opinion, and others I'm sure, the Mardi Gras campground and any of the others on Chef Menteur Highway are dumps. They are without a doubt the worst campgrounds that I've personally seen. And, they are located in a very seedy part of town. I wouldn't stay there on a bet.
We stayed in the Slidell KOA. That was 2 years ago.It was a very nice place and had a daily shuttle that took you to the French Quarter.The owners were friendly and it was kinda in the country,so it was nice and quiet.We would go back there when heading to New Orleans Again.
My personal recommendation is to stay at Hammond. The KOA is nice. It's a ways into the city but it's nice and quiet. Also if your trip is short look into Fountainbleau State Park in Mandeville. The causeway is right there and will take you right into Metarie. I would also caution against taking an RV (except maybe a van conversion class B) on I-10 between Slidell and Nawlins. The road is like a roller coaster and despite the speed limit they all drive 80. I never liked driving my car thru there yet alone an RV. I lived SW (Houma) of Nawlins for 8 years and when I took the 5'er I always went west to I-55 north to Hammond then pickup I-10. It's longer but it's worth it.
The Casino Magic RV Park in Bay St. Louis, MS, is about one hour from New Orleans. It is truly outstanding and I think it is well worth staying there and driving into the Big Easy. It is far superior to anything around or near New Orleans.
Not having the benefit of this website when we visited New Orleans, we stayed at what I believe was the Mardi Gras campground. First campground I've ever been to with bars on the windows, bullet proof glass at the desk and concertina wire on the fence top surrounding the place. :blink: Oh and the local winos with their paper bags hanging out in front of the mini mart. And the trash truck maintenance shop next door that ran 24/7. We were going to spend a week there. One night was enough. :angry: That experience has kept us from even considering Mardis Gras as somewhere we want to be. Just too urban and chaotic and that's what we retired from. Definitely stay outside the city.
Oh and if you are traveling down IH 10 or 12, make sure you have everything in your rig tied down or secured. Those roads are so rough that even the speaker covers (they had never done this before) had popped loose and fallen off. The road is one of the only interstates that I know of that seems to have installed "speed bumps!"
