Custer State Park in South Dakota is one of our favorites. Rivals most National Parks in our opinion. Lots of other things to see in the area, too. Spend a week at least! Jan
I would like add the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon Nat. Parks to list. What a place to see, tops the cake so far for me. Lot more great Nat. Parks in west on our list to see in 2004. If you have an Golden Age Passport you get in free. What a great deal!
Our favorite place to camp is in the U.P of Michigan, Muskallonge Lake State Park. Your close to Pictured Rocks National Shorline, Grand Marais is a gorgeous little Lake Superior town, close to the Soo Locks and many waterfalls.
We like Bandelier National Park in New Mexico. Its in the mountains just outside Los Alamos. The cg is on the mountain and a short drive down into a narrow canyon is the visitor center and very interesting pueblo ruins carved into the canyon. Good ranger-guided tours and a variety of hikes from short and easy to serious back country. Only problem is the CG has no hookups and no hot showers, but the tradeoff is an uncrowded park with a site under a Ponderosa Pine.
Acadia National Park is beautiful. I never dreamed the northeast could rival the west for fantastic scenery, but it does.
My favorite small site to camp is Creekside Campground Edinburg Va it is quiet and mostly for adults-the town is very nice---and there is plenty to see in the area.
We stayed at the Gulf Islands National Seashore, at Ocean Springs, Ms last fall and fell in love with the place. Right on the Gulf of Mexico, close to Biloxi and all those great Casinos plus fresh from the boats Shrimp. We plan on going back next fall and staying longer. It is a National Park just water and electric, no sewers. There is a pier to fish and crab from. Walmarts is less than 3 miles away. Everything you need.
