A wonderful friend just offered us his RV to borrow and my husband has asked me to plan a RV road trip leaving on Wednesday!! So, I am trying to remain calm and I am thankful that I found this website. Hope it helps. We are in Florida and would like to take our 4 boys (ages 11-17) to see New Orleans. I thought that we could stop in the Panhandle for a night (if I can get a reservation at an RV Park) and then continue.

Does anyone have a suggested itinerary? I am open to all suggestions. We can stop in Alabama or Mississippi if there is something of interest to my boys, otherwise I would go straight to New Orleans and stay there for a few days. Then, again, no idea but thinking we could head towards Savannah and then back to Florida. My goal is family bonding and showing my children sites and activities they will enjoy and remember.

My boys like to see and do activities that they cannot do in Florida. History is always interesting but I can only walk them through so many museums. Zoos are of no interest.

This terrific RV is 45 feet so I know that I have the struggle of finding and reserving space at an RV park. Needless to say, I am not going to be sleeping much over the next few days.

Any advice and positive encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

In Alabama you would be driving right by the USS Alabama. Your boys might be very interested in that. Besides the battleship, they have a submarine, aircraft, and tanks on display.

Nearby Meaher State Park has a campground that gets very good reviews, but I don't know how it will be getting in there this late in the game. You can give them a call and find out. They appear to be open year round.

I am planning a Gulf Coast trip for myself in June, but I plan on doing some amusement parks that are not open this time of year.

Sorry I can't offer any suggestions as to where to stay or a good route to take but after reading your post I do have to ask what might be to you, a silly question. You stated your friend is loaning you a 45' RV. Is it a Class A or a 5th wheel? And have you or your husband ever driven or pulled an RV of that length before? That is one very long and heavy RV if you've never handled one before or only have limited experience with one. Also some parks still can't handle RVs that long so your places to stay may be limited along the way. If you are experienced RVers by all means have a safe and enjoyable trip. I'm sure a few folks that are familiar with the area you want to travel thru will jump in with lots of suggestions and ideas, etc......................

    Happy Holidays, BankShot................(aka Terry)

If you are from Florida, you probably already know about this, but another place to consider is the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. The museum is fantastic, but also this is where the Blue Angels practice so you might look up their schedule to see if they will be there.

We like going to the beaches on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but it will probably be too cool this time of year to enjoy them. The only other thing in that area is the casinos, but that would not be something for your boys.

If the RV is a motorhome, will you be towing a car? That is a big consideration for getting around whatever area you stay in. A motorhome that size will not be a good vehicle to drive around for sightseeing.

Why must you make my trip planning more difficult ;-)

Marking that suggestion down as well.

Not silly at all. My husband is very adept at driving large trucks and will be in full control. However, because of its size, I am concerned about where we stop for day visits and making sure that we have reservations for overnights at locations that can accommodate us. Thank you.

That was one of the first locales I looked at but unfortunately they are not flying at this time of the year. Thanks.

We will not be towing a car. Relying on uber and public transportation.

I meant for my trip in June. I tend to like air museums and military history, so Texasrvers suggestion is right up my alley.

Wish I could offer more help, but as I said, my trip is being planned for June in the warmer weather, and I don't know too much about the area.

No matter what you figure out you are going to do, it is sure to be a great trip just getting away. RVing is as much about the journey as it is the destination.

There is a lot of information not given. Where in FL are you starting out? Have you ever driven a big RV? If a motor home, are you towing a car? All of this plays into an experienced RVer providing good suggestions.

Given the choice between NO and Savannah, I would choose the latter. Go along the coast line of GA to Savannah perhaps even up to Hilton Head Island or Beaufort, SC. Then cut across to I-75, then home. Take your time and enjoy the trip, as opposed to just driving the RV somewhere.

Savannah has a nice downtown historic district. Hilton Head, SC is very nice and you will find some upscale campgrounds there. The southeast part of GA has some nice state parks. Find a state park along your route that will accommodate the rig size, build a campfire, and roast hotdogs and marshmallows. For many, RVing is about getting to the outdoors.

For anyone interested in the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, be aware that it is located on the military installation of Pensacola NAS which will require stopping at security gates. If driving an RV onto the base, you will need to use specific gates and there may be a search of it. Check before hand.
