We are planning on making a trip from SE Pennsylvania to the U.P. next summer. We've received tourist information from the state's tourism department. I also bought a copy of Hunt's Guide to the U.P., but haven't read it yet. Sometimes I think planning for a trip is just as much fun as the actual trip itself. Anyway............ does anyone have any recommendations for campgrounds to use as base camps in the U.P. We'll probably spend 7-10 days there and will probably want to stay a few days in 2 or 3 different CG's in different parts of peninsula. (BTW we have a 36' Class A so that may make a difference on where we can stay).
Outside of Marquette is Gitchee Gumee RV Park. We stayed there a few years ago and it was quiet, clean, and reasonable. It's actually across the highway from the lake and is in a great location to go in any direction. Have a good trip, we loved it up there. Jack
When you go to the U.P. this summer don't forget bug spray. Sometimes the black flies are pretty furocius up there and mosquitos can be a pain in the behind also. But don't let that get in the way of you enjoying the beauty of the U.P.! We really like Muskallonge State Park but that's not really centrally located. The Munising area is beautiful!
We were in the UP Sept. 03 and I agree that Newberry is a great base. We stayed at Northcountry Cabins and Campground just north of Newberry and it was very nice campground, good sites. We took in Whitfish point, Tahquamenon Falls, and Trader Charlie's in Newberry. Great food. The Gitche Gumee RV Park is another nice place and good location. It is great up there.
West of Marquette, there are two very nice campgrounds. One is a State Park-Van Riper, the other is a privately owned, called Michigamme Shores. They are both located on Lake Michigamme, great swimming, boating, and fishing. Michigamme Shores is very clean and very well operated.
DW and I went to the UP two years ago and had a wonderful time. For visiting Mackinac Island we stayed at Straights SP and for visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula we stayed at McLain SP. Both were wonderful. We also visited Pictured Rock National Lakeshore in Munising. There we stayed at a National Forest park call Bay furnish, no hook ups and a pit toilet, but we survived.
