I posted this earlier today, but I think I put it in the wrong category.I'd be interested in knowing how many Honda CRV owners have suffered from roaring and whining noises from their towed CRVs due to tire cupping. We have a 2005 CRV and are on our third set of tires. After about 5,000 miles of towing the tires begin to sound like snow tires and create a loud roaring and whining noise. Each time we take it into the dealers they give one excuse after another (misalignment, poor balancing, etc.). We keep the car in good alignment all the time, rotate the tires every 5,000 miles, and follow all the manufacturers recommendations, but it just seems to chew up tires. We're very careful about having our tow bars and tow plate mounted properly and at the right height. I've taliked with two other CRV owners with similar problems. Is there a problem created when towing a CRV? Please share your experience.
Beastdriver, I pulled up my records back to March -2005 on second tire change out. We put on four Douglas so called 80,000 miles tires from Wal-Mart. The mileage on clock is now 13,500 and I checked logs sheets and see towing miles is 14,500 for a total of 28,000 miles total running on the ground. I checked each tire today with a light to get a good look and I see no cupping or odd wear on any tire. Old set of tires run 98,000 miles with towing and clock miles and had lots of life in them but were replaced due to very small cupping and road noise. We have towed the car more than double the miles on clock. Honda CRV is a 1999 model. The new ones may have some odd problem. ???? Sorry I could not help more.
Could your brake controller be the culprit? With the weight of your coach, you probably don't even notice if the brake controller is operating. The CRV is a very light vehicle and probably takes minimal braking from the controller. You would use the brakes alot in city and backroad driving. Just a thought.
After talking with a couple of people I know in the tire business, we suggest a check of your suspension to try and prevent cupping and uneven wear. Also, from personal experience, once a tire cups, it is difficult to get it smooth again.
mastercraft, I can answer the brake controller part, we each have air brakes and use air brake system from M&G to stop the tow. No problems from this item. A problem in suspension will eat up tires in a short time. You will see front ones or ones on rear but not all four at same time do the cupping trick.
If you are rotating properly, it may seem that all four are cupping at the same time. He appears to be wearing out tires quickly if his vehicle is a 2005 so a problem in the suspension could be a culprit. After talking to some tire friends of mine about the situation they suggested a suspension problem or a hook up problem with the tow bar. It is hard to give suggestions without seeing the vehicle. 3 sets of tires in 2 years appears to be a major problem to me.
Thanks for the input. The tow bar is perfectly level and does not put up pressure or down pressure on the Honda, but I have not had the suspension checked. I am taking it into a Honda dealer in Traverse City, Michigan, next week and will have that checked as well as everything else. Just last week, I parked next to a couple with a 2003 Honda CRV who have had, and are having, the same problem. I will keep you posted on the results. Thanks again.
