My husband and I with our two dogs and fifth wheel will be going to St. Augustine, Savannah and Charleston this spring. Would appreciate recommendations for campgrounds in all three areas.
In Charleston, I would recommend the Oak Plantation RV Park. This is, without doubt, the nicest and most convenient park in the Charleston area. Some folks like the James Island County Park, however, but we like Oak Plantation better. In Savannah, avoid Bellaire Wood Campground at all costs and opt for Whispering Pines RV Park in Rincon, near to Savannah. Nice park, plenty of room, and only about 15 minutes from Savannah. In St. Augustine, I would recommend against staying in St. Augustine but, instead, staying at Beverly Beach Campground about 15 minutes south of St. Augustine on Highway A1A. Beverly Beach is directly on the oceanfront, with sites right at the ocean, but yet far enough away from St. Augustine to avoid all the traffic and commercialism. I agree with the previous post on the Oak Plantation in Charleston. It was level, easy in and out and not too far to visit the sites in Charleston. We had hoped to try the KOA just north of Mt. Pleasant on Rt. 17 this year, but we never made it. We have stayed at the Beverly Beach Campground, which was quite crowded and hard to get around. The view was great, but quite a ways to St. Augustine. We have stayed 2 years in North Beach Campground - this place is really lovely but this year it was packed and we stayed at St. Augustine Beach KOA. We had read negatives about this place on the review section, but were pleasantly surprised. The renovations were almost complete when we were there. It was easy to get into St. Augustine from there - although we hung out with family in Matanzas Inlet. There is a recent review today on it and it received a 10!
Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, we cannot stay at Whispering Pines as they do not allow dogs over 30 pounds and we have a Golden Retriever and a yellow Lab. Probably will stay at Oak Plantation and still uncertain about St. Augustine. Anyone out there know of a park around Savannah that allows larger dogs? Thanks
In Savannah look at Skidaway Island State Park. Very large park with lots of old trees. I do not think dogs are a problem. Park has 88 sites with water and power, 50 amps on some sites. Deer run around in park at end of day. Check it out on this web site. Short drive into Savannah.
We just spent a few days at the KOA in St. Augustine Beach, and we really liked the campground and intend to return. They have recently upgraded the roads and sites. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is a great location. Be sure to visit Anastasia State Park and Guana River State Park. The first is on the same island (Anastasia Island) as the campground. The second is about 30 miles north of the campground and has 9 miles of hiking and biking trails as well as 4 miles on the beach. You can avoid driving through the congested downtown area by coming over to the island on Highway 312. You may find that there are mosquitoes in warmer weather, so bring bug spray if you're going to be there after April. There is a lot to see downtown, and there are many good restaurants downtown and on the island.
Hey Y'all, There is a beautiful campground on Intersate 16 coming into Savannah at exit 111. It is called Brookwood RV Resort. We have an eighty pound Chocolate Lab and they loved having him around. It is a pretty quiet park and not too far from Savannah, I think it would be about 35 to 45 minutes to downtown. We live here in Rincon, GA, in fact it is right up the road from Whispering Pines. If you're retired military the rv park at NWS Charleston is great. $90 a week with full hookups, tons of security, new restrooms, 20 minutes to downtown. Doug and Cassi We just came back from two weeks there last Sunday. Don't waste your time going to Kiwah Island. Guarded gate and they won't let you in without a real estate agent. Same for Seabrook Island. Check out the CSS Hunley at the old navel station. It's only open on Sat and Sunday. They do research during the week. Ft. Sumter is a nice trip too. As is a horse carriage ride through downtown. Neat city. You can eat yourself to death there. I sort of felt like Sherman going through Georgia while restauranting!!!!!!! Doug and Cassi
we just returned from florida trip, stayed at bellaire woods (now has a new name and new management). it wes convenient to interstate and the new staff were very helpful. only negative for us was that the campground was shaded by large trees and so has very little grass. we would stay there again, We are very familiar with charleston and have visited there many times by land and by boat. We would highly recommend the james island campground for visits it is practically in the city .we stayed at oak plantation and felt it was too far outside town on a very well traveled road for easy visits. we would recommend the new acquarium on the cooper river. and if never been there should definitely go to ft. sumpter. down town area is very interesting to visit. and go to the batter it is a real view of the rivers. Cant help you width st augustine, have been there by boat but never in rv. I would recommend the world golf hall of fame if you have golf interests. the downtown area is a nice place to visit and has an old fort almost in the center of town. very interesting place.
boater, good to hear about the James Island park in Charleston. We are headed there next week. I've heard a lot of good things about the area and am very anxious to get there. I hope the weather is good. The average high for that week is 74.
Hey, whatever you do, do not stay at River End Campground on Tybee Island, sites are so small, bathrooms are dirty, terrible... :angry:
