New Montana! Shower wouldn't drain or was VERY slow. Husband looked into drain. White membrane stretched across drain. He pierced it and shower drained fine after. Is this a joker trap? Used instead of a,"P" trap? Did we do something bad or is it used to keep sewer gases in their place. It was suggested pipe may leak but we have seen no leaks. Thanks

In residential construction, shower and other drain fittings often have a temporary seal when installed until leak testing is completed. I suspect you found a seal that should have been removed either at the factory or in dealer prep, and was overlooked.

Not a problem at all. Like NYdutch posted, those covers are almost universally applied during construction. Not just for leak testing, but to keep dropped items such as screws, tools, bits of plaster, tile, shavings etc. from going down the drain.
