We traversed this gem of a road (Colorado state hwy 141 between Grand Junction and Naturita CO) while on our way to Mesa Verde from Steamboat Springs in August. Absolutely stunning views of Dolores River Canyon with immense soaring rock walls, with mining history (Hanging Flume) mixed in. We were in a hurry and didn't have time to explore then. But we would like to in a future trip. Very limited services available along the road. Any suggestions for camping in the area (preferably along the route)? Naturita seemed to be the best base camp option (grocery store, gas station, campground (not listed in Wooddall's directory which is what we were using at the time). We were not impressed by Grand Junction area.
We just did this on our way to Yellowstone. I agree, absolutely beautiful. We stayed at Naturita (High Country RV). It was FULL of workers..back-to-back in sites. Just a few for overnighters. There was a note telling people to just go and find a site then get back to the owner. Well, we pulled in and proceeded to do that. He then came running out and told us to park (where?) and walk to find a spot because there were no outlets. It's just a line of pull throughs..the only exit was from the front of your site. Well, all the sites either had an RV in it or a truck, picnic table, garbage can in the middle of the site. We had reservations, too. He said he had put his truck in one to hold for us. Well, we didn't know that...we were looking for a vacant site. Anyway.... We couldn't get into that site, so asked for the one straight in front of us with the picnic table in it. After that, and backing up, it was okay. Crazy set up. We noticed several beautiful spots in the National Forest area, but we didn't feel like we could get into them (will be getting a smaller 5th wheel because that's what we want to do!) We noticed a couple of other RV parks up and down the road, but didn't notice the names. Overall, it was okay because there was no other place that we could find at the time and it was for only one night. Sites are very close together and pretty active in the mornings with everyone going to work. If we go back to that area again, we'll definitely look into the national park campgrounds.
