I am RVing this summer from Kansas to Mackinac Island and would appreciate suggestions for any other favorite destination cities or areas in upper Michigan and/or eastern Wisconsin. Thanks in advance.
We worked at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground. If you stay there tell them Frank and Stacy said Hi. The entire area is an adventure. So much to see and do. Just go and see one thing at a time.
Toonerville trolley back to Taquamenon falls, whitefish bay lookout and Museum where the Fitzgerald sank, the Soo locks, Lake of the Clouds just west of Baraga, drive along US2 overlooking Lake Michigan, Cut River Bridge, and the Mackinaw bridge to name a few. Just south and west of Mackinaw City is a campground for $17.00 per night called mackinaw campground. Full hookups, and rustic. About 2 miles out of town. Pictured rocks at Munising, with a free campground at the casino in Christmas. Also free overnight parking at the Casino just north of St Ignace, near Castle Rock. Don't forget to have a Pasty and some white fish from the great lakes. My favorite restaurant is the Lockbridge in Sault St. Marie, Mich. across from the Soo locks. Huge Cinnamon Rolls at the bakery in Mackinaw fresh each morning. Free Vesper cruise each Sunday Evening at the Mackinaw City pier. Take the later cruise and enjoy the Mackinaw bridge lighting. After the cruise Ice Cream at one of the locals. If you like fresh fish to cook on the grill, Bells in Mackinaw is the place to go. Owned by the Indian tribe. Enjoy and Good Luck
To clarify and add to some of gsbogarts' suggestions: Starting from the western end of the Upper Penninsula (U.P.) of Michigan: Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is on the shores of Lake Superior and includes Lake of the Clouds. Keweenaw Penninsula: Copper Harbor at the tip is where boats go to Isle Royal NP. Marquette: the main town in the central U.P., best area to shop for food and supplies. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Boat tours from the town of Munising. Whitefish Point: Edmund Fitzgerald Museum Tahquamenon Falls State Park Sault Ste. Marie: Soo Locks boat tours. That's just things on the U.P. shores of Lakes Superior.
We recently vacationed in Montague, Leeland and Traverse City (all on the western side of Michigan). We didn't take our RV, but, there are some great reviews for RV parks on this website that I'd like to check out. Montague is the most south of these 3 areas, close to an amusement park, Silver Lake sand dunes - lots of fun to play on; off-roading - lots of outdoor activities; Lake Leelanau in Leeland was absolutely beautiful, again lots of outdoor activities, boating etc and was the most northern point of our trip; Traverse City is also a great area. We also spent a week in the Indian River area, but found there wasn't as much to do there as in the other areas, and we didn't like the area as much. Hope you have an awesome trip.
We stayed a Mill Creek. Nice but a little pricy. Sue St. Marie which was very nice. Go to a restaurant call Antlers. Take the tour of the locks and the tour of an old oar boat. For a day trip, take the 6 hour round trip train trip on the Canadian side. Whatever you do, don't take a firearm into Canada.. The bridge at Mackinaw can be a little intimidating if the wind is up. Chose your time. Petoski is also very nice on the Eastern Shore of Michigan. Door County in WI is very nice also.

If there is one thing I know, the best wines they make never get shipped out of the area so you have to go there to try them. The road is too narrow and winding. At the Northern end is Cross Village where you need to check out Legs Inn for the best Polish food in the Midwest! Dine outside in nice weather and look out over Lake Michigan as you eat and maybe you will see a freighter go by. Quite picturesque.
If you go to the UP (Upper Peninsula), don't miss Lakenenland Sculpture Park, 15 miles east of Marquette, MI on highway M-28, across from Shot Point Road. It's free and open to the public 7 days a week. You can drive and/or walk through the park and enjoy the 50+ sculptures created with scrap metal. One of our favorite unexpected roadside "finds"

Our first stop is in Munising for 6 nights,then Petoskey for a week then to lake Leelanau for a week. We plan to take the toad everywhere in between so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. If you go to Munising, the municipal campground is very nice. I posted a review last October. Also, there is avery nice municipal campground in Sault St Marie. The UP is beautiful.

Well if you are going to be staying in Munising, then I would strongly recommend that you take some time to eat at the Brownstone Inn, just west of Au Train which is just west of Munising. The building is amazing and the food is even more so! Brownstone Inn One other thing to not miss is the Pictured Rocks boat tour. My personal suggestion is either the 10:00am or the Sunset tour. Take your camera! Enjoy your trip to one of the most beautiful areas in the country.
