I am beginning to plan a trip to the Moab and Monument Valley area and would love to hear from those of you who have stayed in that area. Thanks
We have not been up to Moab, but at Monument Valley we stayed at Gouldings. The biggest complaint is that there is a lot of red dirt which gets in your RV, but that is just the way it is in that part of the country. It's been about 4 years since we were there, but we liked it just fine, and I don't recall any problems.
Staying at the campground IN Monument Valley is a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. Otherwise, stay in Goulding. At Moab, I've stayed at several and they run the gamut. Portal may be the best of the bunch, although others will disagree. Again, if you can beat the rush up the mountain or have reservations (I think they have them), staying in Arches may be the way to go.
When in Moab we stay at Ok RV Park & Canyonlands Stables. It's a Passport America park. When at Monument valley we stayed at the parking lot for dry camping. I posted a review. I can only help with Moab which I visited in September. During several drives thru town, I came to the conclusion that none of the campgrounds were ‘resort’ material and that includes the KOA north of town. They are all along the main drag which will result in road noise. A couple are in town if that is your preference. We used Moab Valley RV campground basically because it was at the time a Passport CG. The utilities, facilities, Wi-Fi, and customer service was very good. I was told that there are a couple of BLM campgrounds in the area that are nice, but you’d have to dry camp. The locals like Dead Horse state park. I didn’t go into it. If location is the key to your visit, I would suggest not making a reservation and look at the CGs before picking one. Visiting the National Parks will occupy enough time so that you’ll not be in the CG much anyway.
We stayed at the Cottonwood RV Park in Bluff, which is about 40 minutes from Monument Valley (very pretty drive across to it). Bluff, being somewhat centrally located, also allows you to see Valley of the Gods (don't miss this) as well as Natural Bridges. Cottonwood is a nice park and most sites have a good view of the bluffs. Check out our April 29 travel blog entry www.mytripjournal.com/dilsea for pictures of Bluff and the Cottonwood Park. When we were in Moab, we stayed at Portal, which was okay. We drove through Dead Horse and it is very scenic, but many of the sites are small and you have to bring your own water.
