This place is convenient if planning to spend time on the beach, fishing or surfing. There are no stores or restaurants in the vicinity. San Clemente is north or Oceanside is south. The noise from I-5 is not that bad. The trains going by are noisy.
Tips from campers about San Onofre State Beach, San Onofre Bluffs Campground
- Jim Biermann Interesting to visit the World War II artillery battery near the campground. There is an interpretive sign with a description of the battery nearby. If you walk further to the north toward the beach trail you will find a bunker built into the side of the bluff that you can walk into. The site was convenient to the trails that go to the beach, but it is a bit of a trek, so you will want to wear better shoes than just flip flops. The beach is really rocky - I can post pictures of that. It's a very empty beach, but your ankles will get hit by rocks in the waves. Stayed in the bluffs spot 26. Space big enough for my 22ft trailer, my 4 door f150 and awning out with space for a tent too. I came here as a kid so I knew there was trains that went by at all hours....
