Tips from campers about Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins and Campground

  • narasr Take the 1 hour drive to the Stephen C Foster State Park - which has a primary access to the Okefenokee Swamp. Here you can take a tour boat or even rent a small flat bottom boat for 2 hours for only $40! We rented the boat. It was very easy and very safe. It was awesome and I highly recommend it. We saw a number of alligators on the sides, mostly laying on top of downed trees sunbathing. The office opens up after lunch at 1:30 and the boats get rented very quickly. Be there when they open. I could see kayaking here as well. What you need to watch out for is the weather. And you can't get lost. It's very easy to navigate. This part is a very different look and feel to the Okefenokee Swamp than that from the eastern entrance with Okefenokee Adventures. Both are very much worth seeing. We also took the Sunset Prairie Tour offered by Okefenokee Adventures. We lucked out and were the only people on the tour! It was spectacular. Our night was perfect. Not only a beautiful sunset, but a full moon rise as well. The 'prairie' here is so different from what we saw at Stephen Foster State Park. A tour boat here is well worth it. Note that you may not see alligators on the sunset tour. Better the daytime tours for that. But we did see a barred owl and a flock of ibis. Just seeing this environment, learning about the history of the area and about the vegitation is so worth it.
  • Kmmkristin Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and Park with driving distance. Beautiful, serene and restorative.
  • E- & Ed The Thai restaurant in Folkston is fabulous (previous visit) although it is closed on Sunday nights so no visit this trip.
