Question:
Mon Sep 16 2024We will be taking Rt 70 from NE Ohio, across the mountains and I am wondering if they are worse, the same as, or better than 77/64 to Charleston and Becky in W VA going south, in terms of steep mountains up and down....

It’s been awhile since I’ve gone 77/64 but if I remember right, the hill are steeper than on the Pennsylvania turnpike. I think the Pa pike has more hill & curves but think the hills aren’t as steep as 77/64. When we go to Candy Hill, after we get off in Breezewood, we take 70 east towards DC & take the 522 exit in Maryland. It’s a better alternative than going 81. The campground has signs posted along highway so it’s easy to find. Hope this helps you in your decision! Happy camping!...

70 through PA is definitely better than the hills on 64. Taking 522 at the Maryland line is pretty smooth too....

What Bobboc said. That is the route we take all of the time....

70 thru PA. 522 is q bit windy and hilly and can be slow travel but is very doable...

I did not see a sociable difference as far as gas mileage! My preference is always to stay as far from DC as possible! I have been too close to the beltway at all hours and it’s ALWAYS stop and go! 522 is not congested but is also maddeningly stop and go. Just my thingI set cruise control to 63 and try not to deviate from it! I get best gas mileage at that speed!...
