You got to at least walk around the mine. It is amazing. We hiked to the root glacier (about2.5 miles) and walked up on the glacier ice. Bucket list item for me. We didnt have crampons so did I not explore as much as I would have liked....

The McCarthy Road is a rough 60-mile gravel road. Plan 3-4 hours to drive it. This CG is on the Kennicott River at the end of the road. No vehicles are allowed in McCarthy/Kennecott. Park west of the river and cross the footbridge and walk, bike, or take a paid shuttle ($10-15? We biked) to McCarthy (1 mi) or Kennecott (5). There are 2-3 restaurants in...
Tips from campers about Base Camp Kennicott
- dsvt The McCarthy Road is a rough 60-mile gravel road. Plan 3-4 hours to drive it. This CG is on the Kennicott River at the end of the road. No vehicles are allowed in McCarthy/Kennecott. Park west of the river and cross the footbridge and walk, bike, or take a paid shuttle ($10-15? we biked) to McCarthy (1 mi) or Kennecott (5). There are 2-3 restaurants in McCarthy and 2 in Kennecott. There is a NP info center in Kennecott and most hikes leave from there. We enjoyed the Kennecott Mill Tour.6 years ago Base Camp Kennicott
