Tip for Other Campers:
Take the 1/2 mile trek to Zapata Falls and of course, drive the 8 minutes or so to Great Sand Dunes National Park!
Tips from campers about Rio Grande National Forest, Zapata Falls Campground
- Richard_466 The Zaparta falls are tucked away iniside the canyon. You need to tread on underwater rocks to reach them. Take sandals and towel. Very cold water!
- BerniePam_877 Trip Wizard route is misleading which follows an old 4x4 trail. Major improvements to Zapata Road which is now paved to the campground and the old switchbacks removed. Other
- Squantobon The campground near the dunes has a camp store with firewood you can take back to Zapata Falls. There is also a dump station there. At the entrance to the ZF campground loop there is a water spigot but I didn't see any indication if it was potable but I would assume it is.
