Tips from campers about South Fork, CO

  • Ray and Lisa Johnson This is in a perfect location to see Great Sand Dunes National Park, Zapata Falls, Creede (mining trails), Big Meadows Reservoir and Wolf Creek Pass/Continental Divide. Mexican restaurant within walking distance.
  • JimEbe632 Revolution Rail is excellent for a biking/railroad adventure. So was Mountain Skillz, where you can get an ATV tour and drive it yourself (or have them drive if you want). The town of Creede is also up the road and has some mines and an old-town Colorado feel. There is a malt shop just a few blocks down Hwy 160 that was also a fun place to stop.
  • Thunder Mountain Verizon service is spotty in South Fork. Peacock had three bars of service. One of the reasons we stayed there. Make sure you have provisions. South Fork grocery is eye watering expensive as is diesel. There is a minimal Safeway 16 miles east in Del Norte. Alamosa an hour east has everything you need. Ramons Mexican restaurant in South Fork is a don't miss. We are admittedly green chili and rellenos snobs. They rival anything we've eaten in the Santa Fe area. We ate there twice. The "glow" was wonderful. Get area driving/UTV maps and information at the visitor center. The road to Summitville is easy and beautiful. If you have a high ground clearance 4x4 or UTV the Wheeler Geologic area is a don't miss. Take a day trip to Creede and be sure to visit the Last Chance Mine and take an underground tour. The natural arch east of South Park is really beautiful.
