The 1.5 mile hike to the lighthouse is well worth it. The path is actually a well maintained gravel road.

There are plenty of hiking trails of whatever length you want. The trail to the Au Sable lighthouse starts at the campground. This is a 1.5 mile level, easy trail through the woods but within sight and sound of the beach.
