Tips from campers about Fort Benton, MT

  • Stuart&Sheena All our groceries were found at the Riverside Market. Very friendly store. Fresh produce was great. Nice coffee shop on the main street that overlooks the River.
  • dant123 For many years during the settling of the West, Fort Benton was the terminal for river freight and passengers up the Missouri River. Fort Benton claims to be the first incorporated city in Montana. All that sets the stage for a rich history for the city and the area. There are several excellent museums and information sites in the city, and its easy to spend a whole day wandering around the very well maintained and attractive town. When we visit Fort Benton our first stop is at the beautifully restored Union Hotel to make a reservation for dinner at the Union Grill. Sometimes we reroute ourselves through Fort Benton just for a meal at the Union Grill.
  • Poe Dog Definitely visit the museums. The cost is $12 per person but gets you in all three museums. The ag museum was especially interesting. Another site to visit is the upper Missouri interpretive center. Its a national monument and free if you have a national park pass be sure to watch the 30 minute video. Wake up coffee restaurant has good eggs Benedict. The Riverwalk is excellent with signage explaining the history & life along the river.
