Yes. You can take the ferry from Jersey City to the lower East Side. There is always risk in a big city. I grew up in NY area and rode the subways as a kid. Get mace and carry only the cash and cards needed for your visit. Keep $ in 2 places on your person....

Yes the subway and NYC were very safe during the day. Be alert. Stay away from suspicious activity. We did see one man break a subway window but he didn’t bother us. Ride in occupied cars. Don’t ride in empty cars. We did use it at night also but rarely....

Aloha Family Brays: Sixty years of extensive domestic and foreign travel have taught me to always be hyper aware of my surroundings. To specifically address your question: I have never had a negative experience while walking or taking public transportation (subway, bus, ferry) in the touristy area of NY city - day or night. However, generally I avoid taking public transportation in ALL US big cities after dark; I prefer to call a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. For context, consider the following: I generally do not camp anywhere that lacks dedicated law enforcement protection: e.g., Walmart parking lots, Interstate rest areas, as well as unserviced and unsupervised BLM or US or State Forest Service campgrounds. As for how safe I feel boondocking, let me just say that I always think long and hard about that camping decision....

We didn't ride the subway at all and we only went to the city during the day. We took advantage of the ferries to get from Liberty Harbor RV Park to the city and walked as a group....
