The description I would use for the Cataloochee Campground can be summed up in five words: Primitive Front Country With Generators. The valley is beautiful. The elk, birdwatching, old buildings,...

Tip for Other Campers:

Bring in ALL supplies, including adequate fuel in the vehicle. Make sure you explore the side roads in Cataloochee. There are more buildings and cemeteries than meets the eye. It is not difficult to find elk here. Be prepared for mud and wet conditions in this campground.

Chataloochee is a nice quiet campground with great hiking and wildlife viewing. No cellphone coverage. There is a long dirt road that is very twisty and tight so if driving something large, be aware....

Tips from campers about Cataloochee Campground

  • DrLewie The road leading to the causeway is narrow and twisty. A group of folks who live on that road are protesting planned addition of more campsites. They have signs up asking that the addition not be approved due to the increase of RVs on the road they fear would mean more traffic accidents. Probably a valid concern, so please obey the speed limits on that road.
  • Love At First Site The ride into Association Island is long. It passes along houses and summer cottages. Once you get past them you will get down to the water level. The road way is narrow but passable for RV's. It was about 25 minutes to Watertown where we found all the big chain stores and restaurants (Bestbuy, Longhorn, Texas Road House, etc.) We found The Zoo of NY there. It was smaller then traditional zoos but great for a quick trip to see animals like black bears, bald eagles and wolves to name a few.

We stayed here in our smallish TT in October. Hard to get to on a very windy and narrow dirt road, but if you take it slow it was easily doable. Wooded and pretty campground. One side of the...

There are a number of meadows within walking distance where you can see elk and turkeys in the evening. I saw a mama black bear and cub one afternoon and evening.
