Tips from campers about Lake Murray State Park - Rock Tower Campground
- CRME_1976 Ardmore is about 10 min+/- away. If you've never been in a town with service roads, pay attention! Prairie Kitchen was very good food.11 months ago Lake Murray State Park - Rock Tower Campground
- ChristyWhalin There is a nature center at Tucker Tower as well as the walk up the tower for wonderful views of the lake. We've been to Lake Murray many times and I wasn't aware of any hiking trails so I downloaded an app called - AllTrails - which I highly recommend for this park because it gave me exact paths to follow so we got in a 5-mile hike!
- hikingyogi There is a ton of hiking at Lake Murray. We hiked Buckhorn Trail, part of Ski Jump to Tucker Tower Trail, and Elephant Rock Trail (which is really just a Heart Healthy walk). We didn't encounter any other people, but we hiked early due to the heat and humidity. The maps provided by the park are extremely confusing, so I recommend using an app such as All Trails. In addition, there is a lot of history to Lake Murray and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. I highly encourage a visit to Tucker Tower, which is very interesting. Of course, the crown jewel of this state park is the lake itself (which is absolutely stunning) and there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy it. There are two marinas, one private and one public, plus there are a lot of boat ramps throughout the park. Pets are definitely welcome, as long as they are on leashes. There were quite a few dogs in our campground and they are even welcome in the park office. The western side of the lake is where most of the action is: park office, most historical sites, Tucker Tower, golf course, lodge, cabins, both marinas and the majority of the campgrounds. All of this is easily accessed from the west entrance to the park off SR 70. The east side of the park contains a few campgrounds and several boat ramps and is accessed from the east entrance to the park off SR 70. You can easily move from one side of the lake to the other using SR 77S.
