Tips from campers about Shady Lakes Camping & Recreation

  • sarahroams You will find a ton of hiking in the area! We recommend the Long Point Trail, at the top of the hike you will overlook the New River Gorge Bridge and the river. We also highly suggest you take a drive to Babcock State Park, visit the grist mill and do some hiking. We also stopped at the Main Overlook at Grandview. It offers a beautiful view of the large horseshoe bend in the New River. Easy walk from the main parking lot. Great spot for watching the sunrise!
  • KD31977 Although the entrance has a steep down incline, it looks worse than it is. There is a clearly visible guide sign for larger RVs at the exit.
  • Andrew_331 Lots of great hiking trails in teh National Park Area, let the rangers at the visitor center help find something right for you. We'll be back to rock climb and maybe white water raft in the future. Pizza at Pies and Pints is excellent!

Noisy (until 10 pm), smoky, and muddy. Lakes are nice, but most camp sites are seasonal. Not well suited for short stays. We camped at Shady Lakes Camping & Recreation in a Motorhome.

Pluses: no highway noise, quiet, full hook up, level spot, friendly staff. Good for one night. Negatives: very little gravel, lots of mud. Water faucet serves 4 sites, needed extra long hose, on...

Maybe at one time this was a nice campground, but our experience here was not a pleasant one. This park needs some serious upkeep. From the falling down split log fence that borders the entrance...
