Tips from campers about Whittier, AK

  • bmerch Great visitors center a few miles down the road. Stop by the Byron Glacier trail (to the left before the Visitors center). Its an easy 1 mile walk to the glacier terminus. Walk on the snowfield. You must buy a ticket to enter Whittier through the train tunnel. Opens every half hour (and on the hour going back). Hike the Portage Pass; the trailhead is to right as you leave the train tunnel. Its a 1 mile uphill hike on an old military gravel road to the pass and overlook. Continue another 1.5 miles mostly down to the Portage Lake and beautiful Portage Glacier views. Walk around the harbor / great restaurants, fudge, ice cream. 26 Glacier Cruise is highly recommended of Prince William Sound. Rent jet skis (guided tour). Watch ferry from Valdez arrive/depart. Check out the Begich Condo towers where most of the town lives
  • Wayne_827 Less than 2 miles from the tunnel to Whittier, which has a toll by the way. $13 to go through in my Jeep. A mile away from a Glacier tour which was $44.00 for an hour tour with veteran's discount.
  • PJDour The Salmon Viewing platform! Hike to see the Byron Glacier from the nearby trail.
