Four National Monument historic sites as well- dont miss the little-advertised Crane Petroglyphs site up near Montezumas Well, and the great and informative Docent-led talk there. The town of Rodeo a few miles south is dying and has nothing to offer, and the tiny town of Portal, AZ nearby has minimal services, so do your grocery shopping before coming. Tip for Other Campers:
The Owl Bar restaurant in San Antonio is over-advertised and over-rated, and we had an awful experience there, from wait staff to food. Skip it, we heard the Buckhorn is better. Bosque del Apache NWR is the reason to come here for the birding. Fuel and all shopping in Socorro, 8 miles north.
